Shoshana S. Cardin Leadership Award

USCJ's annual Shoshana S. Cardin Leadership Award recognizes an emerging Jewish lay leader who is making a difference in advancing the values of an authentic and dynamic Judaism.

Created in 2014, the Cardin Award honors those whose vision or ideas motivate and inspire engagement from others. It celebrates an individual, of any age or career stage, who demonstrates exceptional leadership through dynamism and creativity. Recipients are recognized based on the clarity of their vision as well as the articulation and dissemination of that vision.

Winners receive:

  • A $5,000 stipend

  • Opportunities to connect with other emerging Jewish leaders from across the continent through USCJ and its network of synagogues

  • Public recognition at USCJ’s General Assembly of Kehillot; in marketing and publicity materials; and at USCJ’s biennial convention

About Shoshana S. Cardin

Shoshana Shoubin Cardin, known to most simply as Shoshana, was a tireless political activist, philanthropist, and champion of women’s rights, racial equality, and the Jewish cause since the early 1960s. She was one of the most influential Jewish lay leaders of our time, strengthening the Jewish People, and the State of Israel.

Shoshana led by example, rolling up her sleeves and persevering in the face of all obstacles to speak out on behalf of justice. For Shoshana, charity included not only financial support, but also taking personal responsibility for the people and institutions one supports.

As a longtime member of Chizuk Amuno Congregation in Baltimore, she recognized how profoundly Conservative Judaism shaped her worldview and inspired her work. She also believed strongly in the power of individuals to effect change; and in leaders who confidently pursue their goals and in doing so, engage and inspire others.
